my first beer from these guys, cool minimalist look to the cans with the small labels, a good pickup, although not as light or crisp as the best examples of the style, i dont mind this having a little meat on its bones in the alaska context, and the beer is quite well made. the thing is that is has a little more malt character than a lot of these, still a pils malt flavor, but seemingly a little deeper and richer, perhaps a little more toasted and nutty instead of pale crackery character, not sweet at all thankfully, but also not super complete and traditional the way decoction mashed beers in this style often taste, so its just a little strange at its core to me, not way off, but a slight deviation. plenty pale, a little haze, unfiltered for sure, and a frothy white head with great lace and staying power. the aroma and flavor of this are dry and earthy with a little toasted vibe, zesty bittering hops on the back end with a grassy freshness and maybe a dried lemon peel brightness to lighten the whole thing. there is good attention to detail on display here, the water chemistry, the carbonation, the briskness on the back end, and the overall balance. this stands out from the crowd, its not incredible, but its well made and it has a lot of personality. i will be on the hunt for more hoodoo beers when i am back in alaska this summer!
