Iowans have always loved the great outdoors, and with 85 state parks as well as scores of city and county parks, there is ample opportunity to grab a piece of it. Our Camp Fire Black Lager is a salute to those wilderness areas across our great state. One sip conjures memories of sitting around a crackling fire on a cool autumn evening with family and friends, sharing in good times. This German-inspired black lager is full-bodied and rich with subtle notes of roasted coffee, sweet caramel, dark chocolate and just a touch of hickory smoke. Whatever your plans, from camping to simply relaxing, and everything in between, this is the Camp Fire to do it around. Cheers!

The perfect balance of smoke and not smoke. Super refreshing, dry finish. Great amount of head with decent retention. Had on tap at the brewery 12/9 via PubPass, thanks to Graham and Katie for the gift!

Serving: On tap at Short's in Iowa City
Served: 2 January 2015
Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a sickly tannish tinge to the sides. Dirty head on the top that leaves minimal lacing.
Smell: Muted notes of sweetness with dark roast coffee and a pinch of liquid smoke.
Taste: Robust roasted character with a distinct smokiness on the back end. The beer is relatively bitter and finishes rather dry.
Feel: Medium carbonation and medium body.
Overall: A good beer, and one that uses smoked malts to its advantage- adding a touch of curious roastiness and a pinch of bitterness that keeps you going back for more.
