The ash tree has long been an icon of the landscape of England and Iowa. In fact, the tree’s common name comes from Old English aesc. Our ESB pays homage to this hardy tree that has seen better days and hopefully will again in our lifetime. Don’t be fooled by the term, “Extra Special Bitter (ESB).” English bitters offer an intriguing balance of malt and hops. The interplay between the crystal malts and the noble English hops delivers a sweet, yet slightly bitter tingly taste sensation. We used traditional base malts from Great Britain (Maris Otter and Golden Promise). The English yeast imparts a slight mineral character and some fruity notes, giving an overall flavor that reminds some of biscuits and marmalade.

a pretty classic take on the style, well enough done to have come from the wold world, but super fresh and hearty too, i liked his one a lot. my first beer from these guys too, perhaps not the most adventurous recipe, but there are not enough good esb types being made here in the states, so this was a welcome traditional brew for me. richer amber in color, maybe a shade darker than the norm, but i get the maris otter and other english malts in here in the nose and taste right away, a slight corn sweetness, a lightly caramelized wort, and quite a bit of body for what this is, a little bigger than most. the yeast is actually one of the less flavorful elements here, behind even the mild grassy hop bitterness in the finish. its biscuity but a little faint. i like all the fresh grain though and i like it having a little more heft on the mouthfeel. i was pretty stoked on this overall, you dont often see them this well executed. maybe not quite as dry as i like esb to be in the finish, but its fresh and flavorful and really good as it is.
