German beers tend to be crisp, clean, and malt-driven due to the country’s Reinheitsgebot—the oldest food, safety, and consumer protection legislation still in effect today—regulating that beer can only be brewed with water, barley, and hops. The Hefeweizen is an anomaly defying that standard, with a special strain of yeast that imparts banana, bubblegum, clove, and vanilla flavors so intense you would swear they had been added to the beer. While we respect tradition here at Confluence, we aren’t about to be limited by it. In an act that defies the Reinheitsgebot, we added blood oranges to our Hefe. The floral, tart notes of the citrus meld beautifully with the banana and vanilla flavor we coax from the yeast.
