i had no idea this was so strong when i drank it, holy cow, it certainly hit me hard. this is a strong ale, loosely belgian, aged in rum barrels, and its definitely sugary, like raw cane sugar with that unrefined molasses character underneath, sweet probably even without the rum barrel treatment, and i found it a little bit out of balance, even if the booze isnt so obvious as it might be at this strength. some oxidation to the brassy looking brew, without much head, and a strong scent of dried apples, copper, and brown sugar. the flavor is not as complex as i thought it might be, and i end up wishing for more from the yeast as i drink it, more belgian character, certainly more fermentation work to make this drier, and just to add a little depth to the beer. the oak part is there, but the rum just tastes like added sugar, and i almost which this was done in a wine barrel or something for a little more flavor. this is the first beer of this kind i have had from these guys, and the first in a barrel from them too, really underwhelming, just sweet and boozy, not much going on through, oddly simple for what it is, and for me not something i will be seeking out again anytime soon...
