absolutely not what these guys are known for, but they have been putting out more lagers lately, i was kind of surprised to see this one, nobody in the states really makes a classic dunkel lager anymore, neat to see. its light brown in color and pretty clear from the tap with an average off white head on it, some lace as it drinks, and less body and sweetness than a lot of these have, both of which i welcome, especially in summer time. the aroma and flavor are nutty, kilned and sort of dry toasted on the grain side, dry bakers chocolate and chocolate malt is about as dark as it gets, nothing more roasty than that or anything, some middle sweetness to it, sort of generic maltiness there, and i didnt find this overly german either in malt or yeast character, a little less from the yeast than the best of the imports have, not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes this drink kind of light and simple. hints of hazelnut, almond, and toffee to this, clean on the finish, a bready taste later on, and a clean finish for the style. its light bodied for the color, has great carbonation, and actually drinks refreshing and kind of crisp when its nice and cold. impressive quality here, better than expected, neat to see these guys trying some different stuff, much as they have settled into making great ipa types, this is fun. very well executed even though its subtle.
