I acquired this beer during a service call. It was a snowy February day, and this was out and available. I am using an IPA glass and serving the beer at 42 degrees. The pour created a frothy, airy, two-fingered white head with above-average retention. The slow dissipation left chunks of lacing on the glass. The color is light straw with a pale golden yellow and a slight haziness, charting at SRM 4. The beer's appearance is above average for this style, with a rock-steady head that lasts.
Nosing the glass, I orange peel, lemons, floral esters, toasted biscuit, lightly toasted malts, honey, malty sweetness, and light pineapple note. I was expecting a danky beer from the name, but I am not detecting any of those aromas. The other aromas I detect are light earthiness, light yeast, and soft, malty notes.
Sipping the beer, I taste a lightly danky note, floral esters, toasted biscuit, malty sweetness, honey, pineapple, mango, oranges, pears, malty sweetness, and a skosh of earthiness. Tasting the beer again, I notice a pillowy wheat with a subtle yeasty note.
The body is medium-light and has medium-high carbonation. The mouthfeel is astringent and dry, and the finish is crisp.
I was unsure if the beer would present with diminished hop profile flavors, considering the beer is five months old. The hop profile is not as prevalent as I would expect from American IPA. I did taste some of the dankiness, but the aromas did not present that aroma. Surreal Kush is a solid IPA from Roadhouse, which is a fantastic start to the evening.
