Was excited to try something new, which I frequently do.
Am tempted to say this beer is almost more like a stout, but truthfully it is beyond classification almost.
It smokey and malty, extremely unpleasant.
I love beer in general, especially IPAs, and yes I have had red IPAs before.
Wish I would have tried anything else, let alone have bought two.

Pours into an imperial nonic a deep rich amber with a large billowing off white head atop that settles very slowly into a frothy mass.Caramel and nut stand out most in the nose wich isn't bad but this is a red ipa right? Some floral hops are there with the malts but the highlights of the aroma profile is the malts.Thankfully the hops play a bigger role on the palate, some grapefruit rind and earth intertwined with a dryer slightly roasted maltiness with a hint of buttery caramel as I drink more.Ok this is better than the other Helm's beer I drank a few minutes ago.

Surprisingly rich and malty. This is really a pretty good Red Ale for my taste, rather than the bitter dead end of so many.
Lovely ruby-tinted amber color with a decent foam in the Affligem chalice. Sweet and fragrant. There is a bitter finish, but only after the mellow malt and roasted barley flavors. Pleasing honeysuckle aroma. Major caramel flavors but a woodsy, earthy hop note lurks.
This tastes stronger than the ABV would indicate. The "sweet 'n' bitter" taste gets a little old, but it's great for a short glass. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Barons Market on West Point Loma.

This was my favorite on my trip to San Diego. It's the best of both worlds between an IPA and a Red. Lots of sweet and caramel hints at first and then finishes hoppy
