Dark brown with some foamy lacing in the Saint-Martin wine-style glass. Grainy, malty aroma. Melts in the mouth with malt. Some sweetness. A touch of bitter chocolate and a candy-like taste in the back of the mouth.
Quite rich and complex. Massive amounts of roasted malt. There is barely a trace of bitterness, but a little scratch on the tongue finishes the flavor. This is about the brownest brown I've ever had. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the tasting room in Ocean Beach.

22oz bottle, no date
Medium brown color, white head that fades. No lacing. Nice toffee, nutty, bready aroma. Similar taste, but well balanced. Medium bodied, nice smooth mouthfeel. Overall a nice brown ale.

Part of my flight at Helm's Brewing. This was probably the most traditional beer I tried during my stop there. Lots of toffee notes, with a little roast flavor. I didn't think it was too innovative but a really nice beer.

On tap at Helm's Brewing Company. Poured into a shaker pint glass.
Appearance - Brown. Murky. The head disappeared rather quickly.
Smell - Malt. Roasted coffee.
Taste - Roasted coffee. Burnt toast. Herbal. Acidic.
Mouth - Tart.
Overall - This beer is not smooth and unassuming like so many brown ales. The beer has a bite to it. This is not a knock on the beer. I enjoyed it. Just know that this isn't your father's brown ale.
