I don't see any specific bottle date listed. There is "Vintage 2016" printed largely on the back of the bottle.
Appearance: It is dark as its namesake implies but holding it to the light shows more of a dark brown color with hints of very dark red. The head is massive and billowy which stands for a very long time and leaves very good lacing. The head is a speckled brown and white with an overall tan appearance.
Aroma: It has a strong pungent onion and garlic savory aroma and a bit peppery. Some alcohol makes it through but not much.
Taste: I'll start off by saying I can taste the rye very clearly in this beer and it is fantastic. It has this very fresh grain flavor that gives the beer this overall wonderful bread crust base. It is pretty low on the roasted malt department. Hop character is pretty low but it does have this nice mint flavor at the end mixed with what tastes like a very light tea.
Mouthfeel: The beer is effortlessly drinkable. Bitterness is kept low enough to make the beer easy to actually drink without needing to sip. The body is full without being heavy. The finish is clean.
Overall: I was impressed by the beer. It's not your typical American Black Ale and I think the rye really helped out with that. The overall flavor profile reminds me of bread. I do wish it had more hop flavor but what is in the bottle right now works for me. I would buy it again, especially if I could get it on tap. I would recommend it if you are looking for an American Black Ale that is stretching out an exploring a bit in the relative infancy of the style.
