Not as good as the base Scotchtown. Barrel notes almost smell artificial and the bourbon taste is very subdued.

22 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Get the hints of bourbon barrel aging on the nose, but was looking for a bit more in the taste. Great scotch ale otherwise, malt backbone and smooth finish.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #76 (May 2013):

Very well done. From start to finish, this brew lends a very pleasant character without missing a step. Complex yet still very approachable, the barrel aging really elevates this beer and draws us in for another sip right away. Shocked to see that this is a one-off … seriously, guys—bring this one back.

STYLE: Scotch Ale
ABV: 7.0%
AVAILABILITY: Limited

LOOK: Hazed amber brown, tiny-bubbled lacing

SMELL: Malt sweetness, wood, melon rind, dark bread, clean alcohol, faint vanilla, plums

TASTE: Smooth, super creamy, full bodied, full malt jacket, bready, toasty, dried grass, faint caramel, peppery, modest hopping, woody, very warming, drying finish

Purchased in VA. I really like bourbon-barrel aged beers and really enjoyed this beer; however, the bourbon was a bit too much for the alcohol and body of the style. It overpowered the taste of the scotch ale.

I've had this one in my fridge for quite a while, bottle date shows February (2013 I'm sure).

A - Pours a deep amber with several fingers of caramel colored head. Appears quite oxidized. Good retention, half a finger lingers after 10+ minutes, huge thick lacing huge the side of the glass, huge.

S - Lots of dark roasty malts, sweet oak and booze, quite woody.

T - Sweet molasses, caramel, slight tart flavor. Nice vanilla bourbony hints, little boozyness but very tame.

M - relatively light bodied, very smooth, decent carbonation. Easy to drink, i dig it

O - Overall really nice sweet bourbony flavor, quite drinkable, alcohol is there but nicely subdued.
