This beer is a unique snowflake; a Unicorn on a farm of Shetland ponies; a complete original thought up entirely by ourselves, by our own creative volition, without any outside inspiration what-so-ever!
This beer was made to celebrate the life and creative vision of Dave Witham. He brought his "all-out, no Plan-B, go-for-it approach" to everything he attempted. Dave's generosity, creativity, sense of humor, kindness, and unmatched personality, will be missed, but his legacy will live on forever through Proc.

Derivative is a phenomenal series of American Pale Ales by Proclamation, each featuring a different single hop varietal. What sets it apart is the mouthfeel, hop expression, and full flavor: at 6% ABV, it drinks like an imperial IPA, and I mean that in the best possible way. The modest ABV hop bomb that can manage that depth and fullness is an exceptionally rare beer.
Second Derivative is a very, very good homage to the Derivative series and Dave Witham's legacy. It's remarkably full-bodied, coming across soft, creamy, and mouth-filling, with enough liveliness to keep it crisp and fresh. Opaque and almost pulpy, it matches the New England-style common in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, but less so in Connecticut.
On the nose and palate, the hop expression is a bit muddled, a balance of tropical and citrus fruit along with a touch of green herbs. Individual tones don't particularly stand out, outside perhaps grapefruit, mango, and pineapple, but the melange is quite tasty.
Second Derivative isn't quite as magical and impressive as Proclamation's Derivative series, and as a 6% hazy, creamy IPA/APA, it's just outside Beer'd's wheelhouse, who excel at slightly more traditional (I)IPAs with more clarity and bitterness. It is, however, a really damn good beer overall, and I'd gladly repeat.
