A 20oz pint at the Pourhouse, a more than adequate thematic offering for today, arguably the most egregious Hallmark holiday - or so says the wife... :-)
This beer appears a hazy medium copper-amber hue, with one pudgy finger of foamy, bubbly tan head, which leaves an interstitial band of sea spume lace around the glass as it steadily slips away.
It smells of sweet bready caramel malt, a twinge of thin toffee, a mild juicy citrus fruitiness, and floral, leafy hops. The taste is biscuity caramel malt, a touch of chocolate-wrapped toffee, somewhat bitter citrus flesh and faint pine resin hoppiness, a mild wet stone flintiness, and some understated floral notes.
The bubbles are peppy in a base relevant sort of way, the body a decent medium weight, and generally quite smooth. It finishes off-dry, the caramel, sweet biscuit, and pleasantly muddled citrus playing things out smartly.
A pretty enjoyable, and surely session-friendly red ale, with a nice Canadian-esque hoppiness, i.e., a sedate nod to the West Coast of America, and a stronger pull from the Commonwealth factor, so much so, that I briefly dallied with dubbing this an ESB. Oh well, it's just fine as is, a welcome bit of antimatter to the rest of the elemental marketing pap floating about right now.
