A strong pour from a 16-oz. can yielded a finger of fizzy/soapy light beige foam with short retention, a thin ring remains.
Cloudy (can barely see my fingers) copper color, burnt orange in front of sunlight.
Very mild smell of grainy bread and toast with faint, indistinguishable hops. A faint artificial smell like Tang appears with wet carboard.
Neutral taste with mild bitterness, malt leads the taste but it's low in volume. The taste is bready like the smell, the hops are herbal and faint. The artificial taste and carboard are more pronounced. Apple like sweetness tries for semi-sweet, drier-toasted malts balance away the sweetness to neutral (not sweet or dry). The finish is drawn out with lingering hops.
Medium bodied with below average CO2, balanced and almost smooth with well hidden alcohol. Does not warm all that well, late candy sweetness sneaks in. Overall I don't see this beer as being well attenuated as a lager should be.

Draft at Chelo’s in Smithfield RI. Pours cloudy dark brown with a little tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and caramel. Taste is sweet malt, with a little earthy character. About at the limit of sweetness for me but still pretty good.

L - Deep copper, caramel appearance with one finger light tan head. Minimal lacing.
S - Slight apple and slight spice.
T - Follows the nose and fairly bitter.
F - Thin to medium mouthfeel.
O - Not what I would usually expect from a Marzen, but a good beer.

This was poured into a mug. The appearance was a burnt to ruddy orange brown color with a soft one finger white foamy head that dissipated within appropriately. A light rim of white lacing glazes around the glass nicely. The smell starts off with a delicate toast, toffee and caramel malts running into a light earthy spice. I don’t mind it for me but its a little different. The taste was moderately earthy sweet with the spice coming in trying to make an effort to balance. It gets a little grassy in the aftertaste and almost tobacco-like leading into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fine for the style and for me. That tobacco-like substance along with the earthiness makes up the feel along my tongue. Overall, its not a bad Oktoberfest, just a bit different.

Outrageously overactive carbonation made the damn-near impossible to pour - massive frothy head. Aroma is heavily metallic, masking all else. Flavor is disappointingly the same - heavy metal and overcarbonation. This stuff is awful.

I hate buying Oktoberfest beers in August. Luckily for me, this was Augtoberfest. This is easily the best beer I have had in awhile. Samuel Adams should take note. This is a proper Märzen and I hope Foolproof brews more. Outstanding!

My first festbier/Märzen of the 2016 season! I love Fall and can't wait to get back to the ludicrous amount of quality Märzens and other seasonal beers that it tends to bring, so I'm starting a bit early... and what better beer than something I've never had that's also CALLED "Augtoberfest." It's perfect. I've been a bit hit-or-miss with Foolproof, having been alternately underwhelmed by things I thought were going to rule and pleasantly surprised by things I approached with skepticism. With this, I have very little to go by other than the style profile in general... so without further ado...!
Pours a translucent medium-copper/deep-ish amber/caramel with a retentive ring of off-white head that laces spottily. Medium hazy surface and some carbonation rising from the depths. Each small pour adds very little to the head, but does cause some slight bubble activity. In general, this is pretty good looking (nice, slightly-darker color) and sits well in a tulip glass.
Nose sort of puts me off a bit, however. I get a bit of acetaldehyde (cut green apple-like scent usually considered an 'off' component) along with caramel malts, fruity esters and some breadiness. Luckily, though, the ACE blends in a bit with the other notes eventually. Slightly dough-like yeast and husky, earthy malt with some dusty grain scents as well. Average at best.
Flavor is somewhat estery, with the typical nutty malts and lager yeast dusting up the front of the palate right before caramel maltiness and slightly-sweeter aspects take over the mid-range. Somewhat bitter in the transition with a little aspirin/chalky flavor transitioning to cleaner-cut florals/earthy elements and a surprisingly concise finish that feels a bit like dried-up leaves (for whatever reason). Succinct and to the point but not without some slightly weird notes gumming up the experience. Still, not really bad at all... just kind of meh.
Feel is, interestingly, where this one shines. I really like the slightly yeast-affected palate, and the carbonation is pretty on-point for the style. I get sweetness delivered exactly where it should be, and the whole thing feels very balanced with a nice hoppy and dry finish. This is only a slightly above-average beer, but it's worth trying once or twice.
