Now I’m not sure when this one was bottled, but if memory serves me correctly it’s from a barrel reserve night event they held at least a year ago. I picked up a bottle last time I was there since it was on sale, and they make nice sours usually
Pours a cloudy dark amber with no head at all, just a thin ring of bubbles and no lacing
The nose is quite nice on this one, a light but assertive funk. I get notes of wet hay, leather, white grape, lemon, musty sweet malt, and vinegar. Reminds me quite a bit of a a Flanders red
The taste...derails, to say the least. It starts off alright, notes of sharp oak, lemon, and a slight leathery funk. The swallow is much worse, bringing notes of sharp vinegar, stale malt, and white grape. It’s certainly not awful, but it’s not really a good taste
A medium body pairs with very mild carbonation for a tart and somewhat refreshing beer. It goes down quite easy at first, but it’s the aftertaste and the sticky finish that kills this
Simply put, this was a strange tasting beer. I can somewhat see what they were going for, a rustic tart saison, but it doesn’t really work out. Oh well, it was worth a shot
