Canned 11/27/23
Man, it’s been quite some time since I’ve had anything from Foolproof. I stopped in last week for a few cans and came out with some fun stuff. I’ve never had anything from the Revery lineage but a barrel aged RIS sounds right up my alley so I had to grab it. Let’s crack it open and find out what it’s all about
Pours a very dark brown with just a few wispy loose tan bubbles that fades to a ring and leaves minimal lacing. Surprisingly good retention on the ring though
The nose is pretty standard stuff but I dig it, the barrel presence is subtle but still noticeable. I’m picking up on aromas of black cherry, vanilla bean, raisin, smoky tobacco, dry oak, molasses, cacao nib, brown sugar, light cinnamon, and nougat
In taste it loses a lot of its fruity complexity, instead leaning into the bitter elements. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting cocoa powder, black licorice, biscuity malt, burnt toast, dry oak, black cherry, molasses, and caramel. The swallow brings notes of burnt toast, charred oak, smoky tobacco, molasses, cacao nib, chestnut, brown sugar, and raisin
A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes mostly dry and quite bitter
I tend to prefer a more balanced RIS but this is pretty damn good regardless
