Had it from tap at the brewery, poured into a snifter. Murky golden brown color with a nice beige head and good lacing. Fruit smell and taste, apples and caramel, some toffee and cinnamon. Nice maltiness and no boo zines. Excellent barleywine!

A decent beer, but a below average barleywine.

10-11 oz. snifter on tap at Whole Foods in Houston (Waugh)
(July 25, 2016)
L: murky brown, 1/4-inch of thick head of beige foam, full skin -- it's ugliness is stunning, quad-like brown and 100% opaque with super sticky head; keeps a thin ring of foam; not much lacing but still an awesome brew to behold
S: caramel, dust, dark dried fruits ... dates; sweet and salty ... buttery biscuit; a slight tropical fruit aroma, mango
T: flavor overload -- sweet caramel, dark fruits, sweet prunes; hops lurking in the weeds ... an earthy note, dirt hops ... very subdued but present; baked rolls with a sugary icing
F: weighty, good carbonation, some ale slickness ... carbonation can be prickly but for me, it's fantastic
O: about as good as it gets as Lone Pint shows yet again it can handle the malt as well as the hops; The Wanderer comes off like a really, REALLY good doppelbock or eisbock ... just bursting with flavor; if this gets bottled, I'm grabbing all I can find ... with the ABV, my bet is it will age just fine.

This barleywine is very different. It has a murky brown color, a very grainy smell and a bitter finish. Toffee notes showed as it warmed. Now what it doesn't have is a ton of alcohol, on the palate or in the aroma, and a sticky finish. I liked that it wasn't sweet, but the other characteristics overshadowed this nice surprise.

Growler from Premium Draught in Houston, TX
A: Pours a murky dark garnet red/brown color. A one finger beige head forms and gently recedes to leave spotty, filmy lace.
S: Caramelized sugar up front. Followed quickly by over ripe dark fruits, and green, grassy hops, tea leaves even and lingering bitterness. The bitterness becomes a bit abrasive.
T: Caramelized burnt sugar, with a big sweetness up front. Some generic dark fruits, green grassy hops, leafy hops. That remind me of tea leaves, if that makes sense. Bitterness lingers.
M/O: A big full body. The carbonation is a bit on the lower side, and sits a little heavy. Which is to be expected. Smooth as well. A big beer, with aggressive sugar like sweetness and lightly abrasive bitterness. Which not only makes this a slow sipper, but a bit of a chore to finish.
A decent attempt at a big burly American style Barleywine. Plenty of sweetness, that is almost like burnt caramel. Bitterness is strong. Not bad at all, but I don't think it is among the better examples of the style. Though this was a struggle to finish, and more of a chore to drink than I would have liked.
