When you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back. Our Black India Pale Ale combines both hoppiness and roasty-ness into one stygian brew. When done well, this style offers a unique flavor profile by sharing the quaffability of other dark ales such as porters or dry stouts with the additional hoppy zing of an IPA. Embrace the deep and partake of the hoppy darkness.

Malt: Pilsner, Carafa III, C60, and Chocolate Wheat
Hops: Columbus, Amarillo, and Simcoe
Yeast: House

A: Pours a nearly opaque black color. A dense tan head rises with excellent retention and lace. This is a looker.
S: I was hoping this would be a bit more aromatic. There is a green leafy hop aroma, and some light malts. Though I was hoping for some more pop here.
T: OK, there it is. Big pine, leafy green, bitter. Mixed with the dark bitter bakers chocolate. Not overly complex, with some competing bitterness components.
M/O: A full body with crisp carbonation at first. That smooths out, and becomes very sticky and resiny. Enjoyable to drink, and well made for the style.

Black IPA's are never going to be my thing, as I'm not the biggest fan of the competing bitterness between hop and malt. It always kind of clashes for me, which does to a certain extent here. Though at the same time, I'm either getting use to it, or actually getting to like it...at least a little more. Fans of the style should love this, I do enjoy it as well. Even if its not my favorite style.

Dark brown, almost black, pour with brilliant dark amber highlights at the glass bottom. Steady mocha head with lace trailing. Nose is coffee, blackened malt, green pine needles.

Taste sees coco, resiny cedar, coffee, citrus rind, dark kilned malt, some dried stone fruit. Medium to full mouthfeel. Finish is blackened grain and resiny bitterness. Yum.
