Appearance: pours a solid black color. some hints of a very deep brown near the very edges. a centimeter of a tan head with low retention. small lacing and a very small viscosity as it swirls around the glass. completely dark and opaque.
Smell: toffee, some stale coffee, chocolate hinting at fudge. smalls amounts of bourbon and alcohol as it warms up.
Taste: opens up with a very pronounced and buttery toffee, which develops into a fudge-like character. some stale coffee comes through. more chocolate and some more fudge comes through. back end has a light bourbon character and a slight alcohol to it. very slight espresso at the end.
Mouthfeel: medium to full body. some stickiness and lingering bitterness. slight warmth.
Overall: another great barrel aged beer out of Champion. about a year into their bottling campaign and they have produced quite a few good ones. this one carries on the thing i like most about their barrel series: strong complexity without an overwhelming spirit character. still a bit too much stale coffee for me to truly love the beer.
