Appearance: pours a dark cherry to rich mahogany color with earthy undertones. a finger or two of a tan head with moderate to low retention. a small lacing is left behind. completely opaque due to the depth of color and a bit of haziness.

Smell: rich toffee, dark caramels that hinge on burnt sugars. some dark fruits mainly in the form of prunes. smokiness that comes through at a nice balance between peat and slightly reminiscent of smoked meat. light bourbon to wood aged spirit character. Very complex and strong nose.

Taste: opens with strong dark malts. the sweetness of a nice toffee comes through first, melding towards the end with some dark caramels. a hint of prunes seeps through, with some other dark fruits possible. more sweetness but balance by a slight char of burnt sugar. smoke the finely plays along the border of peat and smoke meat. bourbon and oak qualities are just barely there at the end and give it a slightly sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: thick, chewy and sticky. smoke comes on moderately and lingers a bit. there is a ton of sweetness in this beer but its never cloying. the smoke and lightly burnt qualities balance this out. could be a touch boozier, but maybe it just needed to warm a bit.

Overall: Champion does there bocks well, possibly my favorite "style family" by them. this one is the king of all of them. Huge boozy and sweet qualities, with a wide range of delicious flavors. the smoke adds just the right amount to balance this out and add some character. The barrel flavor is also spot on to not take over all the amazing malt character in this brew.
