Stout with a conscious. Chocolate, coffee oatmeal stout brewed with "No.6 Depot Heart of Darkness coffee and raw cacao nibs to be precise.
Hosted by Weathered Souls Brewing San Antonio TX.
"Brewed to support Justice and Equality for People of Color."
Well that seems worth $4 to me even if the beer sucks.
It looks like a stout - very stouty color, near black, which I agree is beautiful, and a mocha mousse brown head that slumps quickly but leaves some lacy remnants.
The aroma is again very stoutish - roasted grain and coffee with distinct notes of chocolate and sweet wort.
Flavors of coffee and roasted barley right up front, sweet but also dry from the blackened grains. Hops seem to play a minor background role of subtle bitterness. Dark/roasted malt character really shines in this one - some tasty sour hints lend depth to what is a slightly thinner feel than expected.
The body is on the lighter side of medium despite the mouth full of flavors, the heavy lifting is done by the creamy oat texture - like creamed coffee without the cream taste. Roasted toffee and coffee splash on the palate and tease the taste buds rather than coat the mouth with syrupy sweetness. Very well attenuated but not thin or lifeless just not heavy.
The respectable ABV is a no show in the mouth, very well woven into the oat-coffee-stout quilt.
Extremely high drinkability marks if you are a stout lover.
This is a fine beer with an heroic, overdue issue it represents quite admirably.
