A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2014. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Another brew from the smallest brewery in Leeds - described on the label as an American pale ale.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy orange-amber hue with fine sediment and plentiful carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that resembles a meringue; this slowly subsides to a thick surface layer. Slight lacing. Aroma of mildly fruity hops and caramel malt with hints of vague citrus, faint pine, floral notes, grass/hay, husky grain, earthy yeast and stewed hops. OK but pretty subdued for an American pale ale.
Tastes of floral hops and mild caramel malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of mild citrus, subtle pine, floral hints, grass/hay, light caramel, faint grain, earthy yeast, strewed hops and a twinge of cardboard. A whisper of solvent and something that tastes faintly of aniseed in the background. Well-attenuated, followed by a dry, leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with effervescent carbonation and decent body. A bit yeasty - coats the palate. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of stewed hops, earthy yeast and faint malt.
Meh - lacklustre. Looks good, if highly carbonated. The aroma and flavour are pretty yeasty, with restrained aromatic hops and understated malt. Body is rather dry and lively. Weak off-notes. All the necessary elements are there but the result doesn't much resemble an APA. In particular, the hops need amping up. That said, this could be a bit old and I may re-review if I get the chance. OK but nowt special - no need to hunt it down.
