A 500ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2013. Picked up recently from Trembling Madness in York. This brewery's beers appeared on the shelves a few weeks ago - I couldn't resist picking up a local brew. Described as the smallest brewery in Leeds; each batch is only 50L.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. An orange-amber hue with faint haze and medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam with decent retention; it lasts for a while before reducing to a surface layer. Aroma of faint grainy malt with hints of stewed leaves and a strange bubblegum/artificial ester smell. Reminds me of the flavourings you might find in cheap sweets. Dry and slightly harsh; no hop aroma to speak of.

Tastes of grainy malt with a very dry finish. Notes of mild caramel, earthy yeast, stewed hops and faint hints of bubblegum. Slightly sweet; the bizarre artificial esters are lurking in the background. No aromatic hops to be found, though there is a faint twinge of solvent. A subtle bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and good body. Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of harsh stewed hops and dry yeast.

Disappointing. Being a new brewery I was hoping for an IPA inspired by the recent trend of intense aroma hops and bitterness. This has little of either, and tastes odd to boot. Looks OK, but the aroma and flavour don't have much hop character to them (just some bittering hops). There is an unusual estery smell/taste that seems artificial and unitentional; very faint banana, bubblegum and sweets. Not really sure where that has come from - the beer doesn't taste 'off' or infected. The body is alright. All in all, it just doesn't come across as an IPA in the modern sense. I suppose it could be considered a British IPA like some that have persisted for the last century (lacking in hops), but what serious new brewer would do that?! Perhaps something just went wrong during brewing. At any rate, while I don't like to knock a new brewery I can't say I'm impressed by this. If you see it - caveat emptor.
