A 500ml bottle with a BB of Jan 2014. Picked up a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. The name says it all really - it sounds too interesting to pass over. I don't think I've come across lavender in beer before....
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A hazy golden hue with good carbonation and visible sediment, including a few large chunks that sink to the bottom. Yields a small head of white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding. Aroma of grainy malt with a distinct lavender note, accompanied by hints of earthy yeast, grass, faint herbs and stewed hops. Intriguing and pleasant.
Tastes of light malt with a hint of lavender and a dry finish. Notes of lavender, herbs, earthy yeast, mild grass and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, with a restrained herbal bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with good body. Could be a tad more spritzy. Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter stewed leaves/herbs and a mild twinge of lavender oil.
Unusual and interesting. It looks nice, with subtle notes of lavender in the aroma and a hint of it in the flavour. Decent body, though it could be more carbonated. Not sure about the honey - there's little to suggest it but this doesn't detract from the experience. Well-balanced; the use of lavender is carefully judged although the flavour does have a herbal edge to it. A deserving brew that is certainly worth sampling if you come across it.
