In a process unique to Two Roads, we mixed a locally-roasted Ethiopian/Sumatra blend of beans with a rich oatmeal stout under pressure (like espresso but without the steam) using our German-built “Brewnik” device. The mixture is steeped for several days resulting in a true, cold-brewed coffee stout. Hop on the Two Roads Espressway!

Flight at the brewery. Pours black brown. Thin tan head. All coffees smells slightly sweet. Doesn’t work for me. Turkish coffee overly sweet flavors. Cloying. Over carbonated for a stout and virtually no dryness in the mouthfeel or finish. disappointing end to a good flight.

Black color. Medium-sized, beige head. Coffee dominates in aroma and taste. Moderate sweetness, a bit of acidity ( from coffee, I guess), roasted bitterness at the end.

L: Pours a rich dark brown. Large mocha head that leaves a swirl of retention on top and decent lacing around the glass. Held up to the light, it is a dark cocoa color, completely opaque.
S: Coffee, roasted malts. Hints of chocolate
T: Roasty. Coffee and malt are present as is the touch of chocolate. Bitter finish.
F: Medium mouthfeel. Some creaminess at the end.
O: Solid coffee stout.

Poured into a goblet: color is very dark brown, head is light tan with fine bubbles and presents less than 1 finger thick, head dissipates quickly.
Smell is a little subdued but notes of moderate roast coffee, roasted malt, toast, cocoa, light creaminess.
Taste is similar but way more emphatic than aroma: big dose of moderate roast coffee, roasted malt, light cocoa, toast, hint of caramel sweetness, light creamy backing.
Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, low/moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness/dryness.
Overall a big coffee flavor in this brew and seems almost more coffee with beer added than the reverse.

For a stout, especially one infused with coffee, this isn't nearly as dark as many. Likely it's the oatmeal softening the color. The head is tan, modest and enduring. The aroma is coffee and roasted malt, but not overpoweringly. This drinks smoothly, nicely smoothly. The coffee and roasted malts are obviously muted by the oatmeal and that makes this an easy drinking brew. There are times for a bold blast of coffee within a stout, but when looking for something more subtle, this works very nicely.
