Single, 12 oz. can copped from Gary's in Madison. Pours a jet-black, ebony hue with moderate frothing. Assertive aroma replete with notes of raspberries, chocolate and butterscotch krumpets. Similar overall flavor profile. Highly recommended. Good stuff!!

Well, this doesn't happen often. A bottled beer, courtesy of the canman himself, woodychandler. Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with no head at all. Smell is smokey, chocolate. Taste is roasted malts, chocolate, light raspberry. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

This is a very hard beer to review so in most categories I will limit my lowest score to 3 as not to bump up or bump up its overall rating. As I believe that for the “right person” in the “right mood” can actually really enjoy this beer. I am writing this review before actually ready anyone else’s and to not feel influenced.

So first let’s talk about look. It’s color is very nice it’s actually is best quality. Nice thick chocolate color. But the chocolate part almost goes to far. It almost literally resembles hot chocolate. It’s very thick and heavy and I think that could be its ultimate downfall. It really has almost not carbonation which for a desert type beer it’s literally all in the head of the beer and this literally has near zero foam and any you might generate while pouring very quickly dissipates.

This leads me in the the feel. Normally I’d do smell next but to keep on the topic of flat and thick I want to go over it’s worst quality. It’s feel is almost of an old beer that’s sat out for too long. But the worst part by far and I don’t even know why it’s likes this! But it literally has an oil like substance in it that floats atop my drinking glass. This “oil can be seen and it actually coats your lips as you drink this beer making almost undrinkable!

The smell is very sweet. It literally for lack of a better term smells like a Queen Ann’s chocolate covered Cordial Cherry! Which can be really good actually if your looking for a beer that actually is what it describes it’s self out to be. This beer says it’s a chocolate raspberry beer and it definitely is! Course you get the chocolate notes in there but the raspberry is very potent!

It’s taste is like I’ve described in the smell. Tastes like chocolate and raspberry’s your definitely don’t need to swish it around in your mouth to find those flavor. The bad thing is in my opinion is that the flavor you do have to look for is the actual beer flavor! Sure you can taste the beer but you can’t easily taste the beers makeup. It’s not toasty like a good stout should be! Instead it’s heavy like a stout but sweet and chocolaty like something almost artificial. I hate to dare but it almost feels like it’s artificially flavored.

Overall this is not that bad of a beer. I have had blueberry stouts that really upset me because I couldn’t find the blueberry flavor at all. This is not that. The whole this is what it describes it self to be a chocolate raspberry beer. But it’s downfall is that they really just said “full send” on those two flavor and really didn’t build the stout part of it first to hold up those flavors. Having to wipe oil of my lips after ever sip is very annoying. Simply adding more carbonation would have made this so much better! I would not buy it again!

A: opaque; very dark brown; less than a 1 finger medium brown head that receded quickly to a thin collar; no lacing;

S deeply roasted grain with a hint of raspberry;

T: up front, it's raspberry with deeply roasted grain; from the middle through the finish, it's raspberry with dark chocolate; mild bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: good, but not something I would come back to;

I was originally going to segue into this one following the two Prairie Bottles (Eeek!), but then a Prairie CAN resurfaced at the last minute & the best laid plans got derailed. These next several are going to be Bottles (Eeek!) of varying types, each one sort of dovetailing with the next. If past history is any indication, I'll be bound up better than eating a block of cheese after all of this!

From the Bottle: "Take the Road Less Traveled"; "A Taste Two Die For … but What a Way to go!"; "Raspberry Chocolate Stout"; "This super decadent stout is brewed with a healthy dose of chocolate and red raspberry that together create a luscious brew that might remind you of something you'd find in your favorite box of chocolates. The taste is to die for - but what a way to go!"; "Here's to taking the road less traveled, in life and in beer!"

I Pop!ped the cap & as I began my slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass, I noticed that there was not much forming in the way of head. I then stepped it up to a free-flowing pour only to get a finger of fizzing, bubbling, soapy, deep-brown head that quickly faded to wisps. 8=O Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with cola-highlights at the edges. Nose smelled more like cough syrup than actual raspberry. In fact, it was kind of drowning out any sense of its being a Stout. Hmm. I gave it a second sniff & I did get a sweet chocolatiness in there, so perhaps all was not lost. Still, I am not a fan of sweets so this may be a real chore. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, on the lower end of medium. The taste seemed rather artificial and yet the brewery's website touts "... made with 2lbs of raspberries per case." Hmm. I've had raspberry crème chocolates before & the tastes went well together. Here, it seemed as though there was a lack of cohesive harmony. Tart vs sweet, artificial vs natural/real and just not a good interpretation of the style. Let's check this site's "Style Guide", shall we? Here is the most glaring omission in this beer: "... American stouts showcase generous quantities of the American hops …" NONE were evident. Finish was bittersweet, almost sour. I found this to be a real abomination. YMMV. 8=p

Canned 12/10/19

Pours a deep brown with a finger of quickly fading mocha head, lots of particulate floating about, likely raspberry pulp

Real fresh raspberry in the aroma, some light cherry notes as well backed up by a sweet milk chocolate and a slight coffee bitterness, just an incredible smell

I love how the tartness of the fruit comes through in the taste and works well with the sweeter chocolate notes. The back end of the sip is all roast which keeps it authentic and stops it from being gimmicky

A bit thinner on the body than I would’ve liked, some light carbonation makes it go down easy tho

I really don’t understand some of the more negative reviews on this one, the flavors meld together really well and it drinks easy for 7%. If this were oak aged it would be over the top good, I’m imagining what a barrel could impart flavor and aroma-wise to interact with the tart berry. Will definitely get more of this!

Awful, just awful. Tastes of artificial raspberry that's gone bad and cocoa powder. I don't get why people think Two Roads is good.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color; traces of dark brown are visible near the edges of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a short tan colored head that died down, leaving a thin layer of beige bubbles covering the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of raspberries are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, flavors of raspberries really stand out in the taste of this beer. There are underlying notes of chocolate and a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I think I might have enjoyed this stout if it had a little more balance between the chocolate and the raspberries, although the raspberries don't seem to be artificial and there is hardly any noticeable sweetness that would make it seem gimmicky.

Not sure about this one. Pours dark with bubbly brown head. Too much carbonation so it's not very smooth. Heavy artificial raspberry body with cocoa malt finish. Not a great combination. A disappointing beer for a disappointing holiday.

Light carbonation with a just above average body
Aroma is raspberry, bakers chocolate, roasted malt,bitter black coffee
Taste is much more dry than expected which feels like unsweetened cocoa. Raspberry is the and comes off well,not artificial. The dry bitter bakers chocolate dominated the flavor which worked but made it very dry

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Visually an espresso foam head pops up and fades away just as quickly, leaving behind large bubbles (!) with a dark brown to black body. Scent is dark and malty, with a chocolate and ripe raspberry scent. A bit sweet as well on the nose. Taste is malt-centric up front that very quickly enters a strong raspberry flavor that exists throughout much of the sip. Feel is a bit wet and medium bodied and a touch bitter. Enjoyable, but would personally prefer the raspberry be dialed back a touch or the stoutiness be built up a bit more.

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is a raspberry chocolate stout? What's it made with? Well there's no mention at all regarding ingredients on the label so I'll assume it's actual raspberries and chocolate. It's an opaque black in the glass beneath a short head of brown foam... although that's dropping away before my eyes. What's left is not that attractive. There are bubbles that look like the bubbles that you get in chocolate milk - milky I guess. The head is completely gone and I'm not expecting any lacing. I guess it must be made with chocolate then because I've never seen anything like this. The aroma offers both chocolate and raspberry but neither are very bold. At least they're nicely balanced though. Wow, what a terrible appearance. If I tilt the glass I can see residue clinging to the side. I'm guessing that's raspberry pulp but it might be cocoa powder as well. On to the flavor... well, as is often the case, it's pretty much exactly as the aroma suggests it will be. There's clear raspberry, and there's a distinct chocolate note but I'm not sure if that's coming from anything other than just malt. It could be but it might not be. The two flavors are balanced but that's about all there is to it. I'd say the chocolate is like dark chocolate, and there is a subtle roastiness to it but not much. So I'm not blown away here, and in fact I'm pretty let down. This isn't a bitter beer at all but it doesn't come off as sweet and thus the flavors that are there just languish. The first few sips are good but then you get used to it and it loses interest and fades. There's a bit of nuttiness to it as well, but that's not enough to keep it alive. Ho Hum. The mouthfeel is the only thing left to address and although it's good it's not anything to write home about either. I'd call it medium bodied with a limited carbonation. It's not quite flat but certainly on the lower end of things. If it was a standard English ale I wouldn't mind. In the end I have to say that although I like the real raspberry flavor the rest of the beer fails to shine. It's OK, there's nothing bad about it, but it's not exactly satiating.
