I am trying a crowler of this beer at my bestie's house in Charlotte, NC. It poured a nearly opaque dark amber with khaki head that is leaving some lace. The scent had roast and pine notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with roast dark malt base and pine resin finish. The mouthfeel was medium in body and and good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

a very tasty black ipa from these guys, on tap at tivoli, which might be the best kept beer secret in town here. this is a little lighter than expected, as much brown as it is black, but with a lush and thick tan head on it. smells solid, less pine intensity than i think i was hoping for on this wintery day in early spring, but it has a nice hop profile to it, just a little more in check. pine and lemon rind i get on the nose, more spruce tree straight up in the taste. there is also a little less of the impact from the black malt than i was looking for. less of the earthy coffee almost acrid bitterness you can get in the style. i was in the mood for something heavy and aggressive in this style, and this one is a little more reserved, especially for these guys, but its well done. more of a light roast to the grain, sweetening balance, not heavy at all, and somewhat of a dried fruit note, cherry or raisin right before the hops kick in late. its good beer, easy to drink swiftly and in high quantity, but i like my black ipa a little more black, and a little more hoppy. still, i like all the beer these guys make, and this is another good one all told.

Strong coffee notes and finishes with a very bitter hoppy end. Incredible. Any fan of IPAs with a coffee notes will enjoy. Cheers!
