Appearance: Pours cloudy and amber colored, the head reaching a finger or so in height; a few shards of lacing linger

Smell: Fruity, with melon, passion fruit, blueberry and pine aromatics

Taste: Fruit forward, with melon and passion fruit dominating the front end; the salad builds with blueberry and apricot; through the middle, a dank bitterness offsets the fruit, bringing a piney finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I like a good IPA as much as the next guy, but this one leaves me wondering where we are heading with all this; the NYC area was way behind in craft beer 10 years ago and, over the last few years, the region has been blessed with a number of great breweries opening up - but how many ways can you craft an unfiltered IPA? Clearly there is plenty of demand for this stuff but at some point this phase needs to blow over so that the brewmasters can produce other styles

Thanks, IndyDad, for the opportunity

It pours a hazy brownish orange color with a short head that leaves no lacing. The nose features subtle notes of tangerine, passionfruit, and kiwi.

The taste opens up with melon, ripe orange, and more tangerine notes. The finish is a bit peppery and dank as hell with big Sour Diesel notes that I didn't necessarily love in this format.

Booziness was moderate for the ABV. Very low carbonation. Mouthfeel was maybe a bit south of medium for a big DDH DIPA. I honestly don't like this as much as regular SSMS, but glad I got a chance to try it. Won't be going out of my way to get my hands on this in the future, though.

On-draught @ the brewpub:

Bursts of mosaic blueberry harmonize with vague tropical fruit (I think I'm getting mango, tangerine, and guava) and pale malts to good effect, yielding a balanced brew boasting nice depth of flavour. Hop profile is interesting, bringing enough diversity of layered flavours to keep discerning drinkers engaged.

Side by side with regular Softly Spoken Magic Spells, I doubt I'd know the difference.

Refreshing, smooth, wet, medium-bodied, slightly overcarbonated.

Average duration and intensity of flavour.

Drinkable fare particularly given its ABV and style. Absolutely worth trying when at SingleCut and one of the better stabs at the style out of any New York City brewery in my opinion. Nevertheless, it's from comparable to the best expressions of the style on a national level (let alone globally).

2017 release
~1 month from canning date

Appearance- Pours a creamy looking golden orange color, very hazy. Half finger thick white colored head, fizzy / soapy and dissipates to a thin layer. Small patches of spotty head lacing.

Aroma- Freshly cut fruit. Sweet peach juice, fresh mango and pineapple. Citrus juice w/ a touch of zesty peel.

Taste- Creamy, juicy tropical fruits. Peach, mango, papaya, pineapple. Pureed citrus juice, oranges, tangerine, grapefruit. Light passion fruit. Touch of herbal dankness and fruit rinds on the finish.

Feel- Medium bodied, very creamy and thick, sweet w/ a slight dry finish. Lower carbonation, almost no head retention.

Overall- Just a super juicy and creamy IPA. The aroma explodes out of the glass like freshly cut fruit in a blender, and the taste does well to hold up the expectations of the aroma. A wonderful upgrade over the regular version.
