AS THE FIRST real lager made in Queens since Prohibition, our address coincidentally also signifies the year Prohibition ended. So what else could we call our flagship lager, a Czech/German Pils mashup brewed with only authentic ingredients from both regions? A satisfying rich malt body, crisp and super clean finish with overtones of lemon rind and mild spice.

Clear, green-hued straw color. Lasting head which provides some chunky blankets of lace.
Corn and raw barley grain nose. The hop portion is light and floral.
The flavor is a step upward. This pilsner is far drier than most. The base has more pilsner malt than raw grain taste. The hop is also stronger and more bitter than the smell indicates. Rich body for the style with good carbonation. More bitter aftertaste than the style suggests.

The clear bright golden yellow beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 3/4” fluffy white head that recedes slowly to a thin cap of foam and eventually to an irregularly shaped island of foam while leaving an irregularly shaped ring around the glass that has streaks and patches of lacing. Sipping creates a couple of arches with lots of small patches and legs of lacing.
The aromas immediately shout out “Saaz” with their characteristic herbal, earthy and spicy aromas. There’s some nice bready malt in the background and just a touch of citrus.
The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the mild and delicate flavors of the Saaz hops and their spicy, earthy, and herbal character. The lightly toasted bready malt backbone also has just a bit of sweetness that blends well with the noticeable but gentle earthy hop bitterness that has some citric character as well.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly prickly with the finely bubbled moderate carbonation. The quite long finish begins as the sweetness and toasted malt begin to fade allowing the mild hop flavors to show before they begin to fade as well into a clean, crisp, dry, herbal and gently bitter ending that seems to persist indefinitely.
Overall this is a well made enjoyable interpretation of the style that I’m enjoying and would be happy to have again. I would definitely recommend it to Pils lovers who are particularly fond of what Saaz hops bring to the table. That said, however, there are plenty of more locally brewed Pils beer available that I enjoy as much or more and that would be less of a hit on the budget.

DATE: March 4, 2018... OCCASION: watching the Oscars with Shan... GLASSWARE: Hennepin pokal... pours a champagne-like golden body, clear as crystal, singular in its pillar of effervescence, with a thin ring of white bubbles as its head... a stellar appearance... toasted oats and Saaz are the strongest representations here, with a perfumed sweetness like a honeyed flower... bready, slightly peppered, and mildly aromatic.... sips at a smooth, slightly oily body--medium-bodied at that, resonating long after its finish... the flavor profile is toasted bread, sharp noble hops, hard fruits like apple and pear, and a reasonable sweetness that does as a pilsner should... my first Singlecut, this doesn't dissuade me from trying another... solid and representative of the genre...
