Good beer, too bad they stiffed the label illustrator. Do better, Spiteful.

Had on tap. Somewhat clear dark brown body, tan head. Smell has dark fruit, hints of caramel, rye, all encrusted into mild and slightly roasted malts. Taste is much the same, some dark bread added. Light and malty feel, oh so smooth, appropriate balance for the style. This is a really good dark mild, wish I could try it on cask!

Rating is for the cask/draught version.

This might be the best dark mild brewed locally in Chicago. Get this beer on cask and it would be just sublime. A must try if you are at the brewery.

Review of canned version:

I will say upfront that this beer is good, but not nearly as good as it is on cask/draught. With that being said, lets get to it.

This one pours a dark brown color that is surprisingly reddish when held up to light. Its clear, but due to the darkness of the beer is not really see-through. Lovely two finger velvety mocha colored head forms on the beer. Aroma has notes of dark bread, rye, nutty malts, with a light, earthy hop note.

Taste follows the nose with notes of dark bread, rye, nutty malts, earthy hops, with a light spiciness and a touch of brown sugar. Its a malty delight thats easy to drink. Feel is just off in the cans - its sprightly carbonated. Otherwise its light and easy drinking. Its just impossible to capture the feel of cask in a can, so I will not fault them too much for it.

Overall its a lovely dark mild, and clear and away the best dark mild I have had brewed in Chicago (an admittedly sparse lineup). If you ever get the chance to try it at Spiteful, do not pass it up.
