Dave Levonian, well-known homebrewer and craft beer enthusiast, passed away in 2008, before his fortieth birthday. Dave was known for his Belgian dubbel homebrew recipe, which many San Diego-based breweries went on to brew, calling it Brother Levonian. Paul Sangster, owner of Rip Current, is putting his own twist on the beer, which he dubbed What Would Dave Order? Sangster said the recipe is very similar to Dave’s original, with a few tweaks to make it more commercial brewery-friendly.

July 19th, 2015 - Rescued from a Quaff member who passed in 2008, this beer has a lot of significance to its brewers and the Rip Current community. But it is also a delicious beer in its own right, and worthy of the Quaff name. Large nut and apple skin flavors peak in the aroma, followed by dark fruits later, mostly blackberries. The palate is soft and light but foamy, and lets the flavor creep up on the drinker. Mostly I detect a slow approach of blackberry and fig, though restrained and polite, and followed by a long aftertaste with a slight, boozy burn. It starts soft but ends hot, but the journey is enriching.

Pour appearance head wise and body are a bit light. But color is strikingly spot on. Nose and taste are rich with a wet wood dried fruit and dry hoppy bitterness. High ABV but doesn't distract, Closer than I would have thought to an Abby dubbel
