July 19th, 2015 - Rip Current's Marine Layer is still around (as of December 2018) and there's a good reason why. Starting from the pour, it presents itself as a thick, chewable brew, opaque with flavor, and in this instance, poured straight up to the brim. The smell is also dense and sweet, with graham cracker, banana and clove making an aromatic trifecta. The flavor tastes like a classic hefe, with an extra edge of tang, and the mellowing effect of banana and orange. There is, I think, more citrus notes than is typical for hefe, but I suppose that keeps the orange peel from being invited to the party.

SMELL --
Citrusy.

TASTE --
Crisp (but less crisp than other Hefes), mild citrusy, and I am picking up a smooth honey taste.

COLOR --
This Hefeweizen is completely unfiltered. It is a super cloudy, warm, glowing soft yellow. Its funny, the Germans made a Cristalweizen to add clarity to Hefe to make it more beautiful compared against the Pils, but I think this super cloudy beer just looks very appetizing and pleasant.

MOUTHFEEL --
Super smooth and creamy. Feels the way a good Hefeweizen should feel.

OVERALL --
Yes. Although this still falls short of a great, fresh German Hefe while in Germany, it sure as hell is close. On the othe hand, it can definitely hold its own against against some of the great Hefes out there, and its complete lack of filtration sets it apart.

On tap at Local Habit in San Diego. Handsome cloudy amber in the tall tulip with good head to start. Spritzy in the mouth, though perhaps less creamy than a good German version. Tangy and fairly light bodied.

The malty flavors fill the mouth. A little bit sharp with a different mix of esters. Fruity and spicy, but tastes more like a Saison with a German influence. Very drinkable and a nice alternative to some of the richer, thicker Hefeweizens. Pleasing maltiness with a lighter touch. Not so much banana but a nice touch of fruit, and something spicy but missing the often-overbearing cloves.
