served on cask, a wood aged stock ale, and a pretty cool beer, albeit rather low alcohol for what i think i know about the style, it sure doesnt drink like its light in any way! sort of a deep amber color to it, short headed, and with strong dried fruits in the nose. things like currants, raisins, and dates come to mind, even dried cherry and prune, with quite a bit of long boiled grain sweetness, some oak tannins, and maybe the lightest tartness here offsetting the sweet. the flavor is more of the same, brandy soaked wood, mature and mellow english ale yeast, a note of vanilla and boubon, and tons of date and raisin, warming alcohol, and sticky toffee sweetness. its complex and its wintery, and even at a lower abv for the style, its a slow sipper to be sure. the wood element is only moderate, and its the complex malt that really drives this. nice effort overall, the perfect beer to serve on cask, and one of the more interesting beers i had from these guys while i was in london. well executed and unique.
