Tasted by a half-pint at the Capitol, a JDW pub in Forest Hill, SE London; handpulled, w/o the aid of a sparkler.
A: dark ruby to russet brown in colour, looking very elegant indeed; a thin but well-sustaining sheet of off-white froth tops a rather static body.
S: mildly spicy dried-leafy hoppiness abounds, underlined by toasted dark fruits, juicy plum syrup, and dried apple-slices, while a syrupy and bitter-sweet crystal maltiness reveals itself following a good swirl.
T: delicious toffee-ish malts and aromatic toasted dark-fruits come hand in hand, added with a touch of chocolate, caramel, licorice-powder, and earthy hops the foretaste evolves slowly but clearly into a mildly roasty-bitter (as in roasted black tea) as well as dried-leafy hop bitter aftertaste to linger nicely.
M&D: the texture is very fresh and soft for a cask ale, med-bodied and fairly balanced overall; somehow it still lacks a clearer theme and a more lively element to make it an outstanding and attractive Best Bitter. That said, this is still a quality brew well worth a try, just like all other Elgoods ales (IMO)!

Tasted at the Reindeer on 16/1/05...
Appearance: mahogany brown, slight haze, thinnish layer of white froth, tiny lace threads
Aroma: malty and slightly nutty, hint of woody hops, touch of roast, caramel
Flavor: initially a nutty sweetness, the slight tang before an alkaloid bitterness, hint of green apple Jolly Ranchers somewhere off in the distance, finishes dryish with an aftertaste of dark malts, vegetal bitterness, and burnt caramel
Mouthfeel: medium-full body, low to no carbonation, slightly warming
Other comments: It was featuring at a reduced price (1.80#) so I think this cask was at the tale end of it's life. Nonetheless, it still tasted pretty fresh, but carbonation was virtually nonexistent.
