Bottle. Almost black. Thick dense frothy head.
Mild aroma of toffee malt and hops which continues into the taste. Medium bitter completion.
Lacks depth. Decent carbonation.
Not enough hop for the style.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2020. Purchased recently from ALDI. Described on the label as a Black IPA based on their regular English IPA; the character includes roasted malt and a fruity hop nose.

A: Poured into a straight pint glass. A very dark reddish-brown that appears virtually black in the glass. Yields a large head of frothy beige foam that lasts for a moment or two before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Some lacing.

S: Aroma of buttery diacetyl with hints of mild roasted malt, a whiff of caramel, vague ale yeast and subtle leafiness. Decidedly underwhelming - the character doesn't come through well.

T: Tastes of dark roasted malt with notes of burnt grain, subtle caramel, stewed hops, leafiness, vague pine resin, a touch of citrus peel and ale yeast. A twinge of diacetyl lurks in the background. Faintly sweet, followed by a strident malty, hoppy bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with prickly carbonation and a somewhat insubstantial body for the style. Quite astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of bitter stewed hops, pine resin, roasted malt, burnt grain and ale yeast.

O: OK but hardly an amazing example of the style. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are suffused with diacetyl, bitter hops and dark malt. The aroma especially needs work. So-so body; a tad thin. Quite astringent and somewhat unbalanced by the bitterness - the hop aroma doesn't come across well. Not a great effort; in need of improvement. No need to hunt it down.
