[Reviewed from notes taken in Winter 2014.]
5.30% ABV.
Served on-draught @ Black Bottle. 14 oz cost $3.50. Served into stemware.
HEAD: 1 finger's worth of white head. Smooth even consistency. Soft complexion. Nicely frothy. Leaves light lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes. Retention is excellent (~7-8 minutes).
BODY: Clear translucent vibrant copper. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible within.
It's a nice looking pale ale, but it isn't unique or special within the style. I'm looking forward to trying it and it appears well-carbonated.
AROMA: Lovely citrusy hops - clementine, tangerine, blood orange, and a kiss of grapefruit. The blood orange aroma is fantastic. This is a fresh evocative beer aroma - great for a pale ale. Pale malts, a kiss of caramalt.
Really incredible, yet mild in terms of aromatic intensity.
No yeasty or off-notes are detectable, nor is overt alcohol.
TASTE: The blood orange is more faint that I'd like (and than the aroma suggested), but the flavour is awesome and the more subsidiary citrusy hop flavours (tangerine, clementine, mango [no grapefruit]) complement it wonderfully.
Hop bitterness is very well kept in check by the pale malt sweetness. There's a biteen too much caramalt, lending it slightly too much sweetness for a pale ale overall. For the most part, though, the balance is superb.
I do want more depth of flavour - particularly in terms of the blood orange - and more flavour intensity would be nice, but it's already pretty assertive and bold for a (mere) pale ale. This has more character than many IPAs out there, even as a pale ale. Cohesive in build, though not quite a gestalt whole that exceeds the sum of its parts.
Well-executed, with good hop choices. I rather like it. It boasts notable complexity for beer in this style, but it is a bit muted overall. The flavours are great; I want more expressiveness thereof.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, a bit too thick, and slightly overcarbonated. Complements the taste decently, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole or to accentuate specific notes. Has a decent overall presence on the palate.
OVERALL: While easily well above average, this isn't one of Black Bottle's best pales - but then based on what I've tried, they're one hell of a pale ale powerhouse. There's a lot of potential here as well as some great flavours - I just wish it committed more to them in terms of depth and expressiveness. With tweaks, this could be a world class expression of the style. Very drinkable and definitely worth trying. I'll be keeping a close eye on Black Bottle going forward.

From growler. Pours clear copper amber with a big creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is subdued - biscuity malts and some grassy hops.
The flavor is sweet biscuity malts with a little fruit and grassy minty hops. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, to much biscuit malt and not the hop profile I care for.
