From growler. Pours light redish amber with a big fluffy off white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet fruity malt with grassy piney hops.

The flavor is biscuity malts with grassy metallic hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with slightly sharp carbonation.

Overall, good bitterness but don't care for biscuit malts and off notes.

GROWLER review. Filled at Black Bottle a couple days ago. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery. Served cold into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Cost for 64 oz was $10.00 USD. I couldn't side-pour due to the weight of the growler. 4.90% ABV. Black Bottle's menu clearly identified this as an IPA. Not a pale ale, not a session IPA, an IPA.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Six fingers wide. Off-white colour. Nice thickness and creaminess. Pretty frothy. Has a nice soft complexion and a smooth, even consistency. Spotty "legs" stick to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Retention is pretty good - about 6-7 minutes.

BODY: Clear translucent textbook copper of good vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Superb clarity.

Overall, it's a nice if typical appearance for an IPA. I'm looking forward to trying it, but it's far from unique or special.

AROMA: Pine, caramalt, pale malts, honey malt, and light touches of floral and herbal hop notes. It's a pleasant aroma more in line with a pale ale than an IPA - at least judging by the intensity of the hops. There's nothing unique or special about the aromatics. Evokes an above average but largely uninteresting brew.

Average in strength.

No yeast or hops are detectable.

TASTE: Pale malts, caramalt, floral hops, and some pine. That's about it. It's quite a generic flavour profile and features no interesting flavours. Some hoppy fruitiness might be nice, as would some nectary or juicy notes.

It's quite simply built, but is cohesive and has nice flavour amplitude. The pine is subtle, I suppose. More flavour intensity would be lovely.

The largely untamed hop bitterness in the third act isn't particularly enjoyable, and leaves the drinker with an overly bitter aftertaste; it doesn't exactly encourage the next sip.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, aptly thick, and unrefreshing. It's got the heft and weight of a pale ale, not an IPA, and this texture supports the flavour profile decently, but not well. Overcarbonated.

Decent overall presence on the palate.

Not gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh. If you told me this was 6 or 7% and I had it blind, I'd probably believe you; it doesn't hide its ABV well.

OVERALL: An above average beer overall, but not really much of an IPA. More an uninteresting pale ale with insufficient hop character. It's quite drinkable, and I'll easily finish the growler, but I wouldn't buy this again. It's not up to par with Black Bottle's best offerings. Not sure why they're putting out 4.90% ABV IPAs; is this session IPA trend-chasing?
