oatmeal stout with hazelnuts. great idea and pretty good execution. the base stout is fantastic, with a lot of creamy rich oaty body and a nice dark bitter roast element that mimics coffee in here, a perfect foundation for the nutty sweet hazelnuts, which seem a little overdone in the nose, more of a syrup or an extract than actual nuts themselves. it lacks that raw or toasted earthy nut element i would have expected from whole nuts. more obvious in the flavor, definitely a concentrate of sorts it seems to me. i still like what it adds, all that hazelnut flavor right in the middle of the beer, a bit of brown sugary sweetness, and a good round balance to the bitter roasted barley. nice complexity and a great creamy mouthfeel, substantial and interesting, thick and palate coating but never heavy. seems built for this time of year. potent on the nuts, i dont think you could get this much flavor out of just nuts, and there is a little bit of an artificial vibe to this, like a hazelnut latte or something with the pump syrup flavoring. not quite that cheap, but that kind of impression. fortunately the beer is big and bold enough to match up to it. i liked this a lot, and appreciate the constant experimentation that takes place in here!

From growler. Pours dark brown black with a huge creamy bubbly light brown head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is roast malt, coffee and some chocolate and hazelnut.
The flavor is sweet fudgy chocolate malts with coffee and light hazelnut and a big roast finish that's slightly acidic. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.
Overall, a nice chocolate and roast coffee stout with some light hazelnut.
