On tap at Red Papaya, Seattle
Bellevue Brewing seems to do an annual barrel aged version of their Scotch Ale, and the aging process varies from one year to the next. Their 2013 was aged on Rye barrels. I had the 2014 Barrel Aged version, which seems to have been aged in Bourbon barrels. That's how it was described at Red Papaya; other websites variously call it Whisky Barrel aged, or Bourbon Barrel aged.
This is a barrel aged beer in which the underlying beer is still the main story, not the barrel. So it's a typical Scotch Ale, malty, sweet, caramel. It's smooth and mild. There's bourbon there, in the aroma and the taste, but it's not nearly as intense as other barrel aged beers I've had this winter. If you like just a mild bourbon effect, this is the one for you.
