Got this one from Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
No. 39
EBU: 62
EBC: 370
Imperial stout with port barrel aged on whisky barrels
APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour yields a 1+ finger, thinner looking, fizzy, foamy light brown head with decent retention. Noisy and fizzy. Clear bistre brown in color with lower levels of carbonation. Head slowly recedes to a half wisp and ring.
SMELL: Woody with definite peat and leather, tobacco aromas, as well as some light port wine notes. Milder in aroma.
TASTE: Relatively bland but there’s some peated whisky with hints of leather and tobacco up front. Red wine flavors too with some alcohol at the swallow. A milder and somewhat watery finish of red port, peated whisky, leather, tobacco, some oak flavor and alcohol. Lingers a bit but is somewhat restrained and watery in the finish.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. No real heat lingers.
OVERALL: Not that impressive. The barrels are either not that great or the beer wasn’t aged long enough, and the base stout isn’t all that impressive either. I would expect more base stout character if you’re going to barrel age the beer, and then I’d expect more character from the barrels as well if you’re going to bother using them. Pass on this one.
