A dark brown beer with a quick settling head.
The smell is comprised of wood, vanilla, oak chocolate and a mild roasted malty smell. The beer shows a light oxidation, but very light.
The beer is woody and has light notes of the oak with vanilla and a sweet tannines. The beer has a distinct chocolate taste, which is kind of like cacaobeans. The barrel aging offers a very nice depth to the beer, and actually makes the beer quite different.

Bottle bought at the Mitra down the road. A barrel aged version of base Poorter.
From a bottle into a snifter

Drunk right after the base beer for comparative purposes
APPEARANCE: A very clear, light brown pour yields a huge, loose, fizzy, light tan or cream head with decent retetion. Transparent seal brown in color with higher levels of carbonation. Head fades to a full wisp with lots of carbonation shooting up to the top. A slight wisp and thick ring remain until the end but leave no lacing down the sides. Very thin and transparent body for the style, and the head was pretty ugly. Too much carbonation as well. Same as the base beer but with a ridiculous head.
SMELL: This actually shows some decent promise in the balance department. The fruity, spicy base porter is there with a layer of barrel as well. Dark fruits, spicy notes, and some whisky, oak and light coconut from the barrel aging. Well balanced, but could definitely be more forthcoming.
TASTE: More barrel than the nose had suggested. Whisky, oak, with coconut and vanilla flavors through the middle into the finish. Bolder and lingering finish with barrel flavors, some spicy booze flavors and a touch of bitter cocoa powder from the base beer. Decently flavorful and a more pronounced barrel than the nose had lead on. Too bad the feel is so shitty.
PALATE: Shitty. Just awful. Thin, light, airy and abrasive initially, then goes down like a rake across the back of your throat and finishes somewhat sticky. Feels like coke with twice the carbonation, if that were even possible. This is proof that someone doesn't like me.
OVERALL: Bonus points for trying I guess. Glad to see a small Dutch brewery experiment with barrel aging. The flavors of this one actually worked out quite well, and it is much more interesting than the base beer. If it weren't for the offensive feel, this would have been a nice success story. Unfortunately the painful palate makes this very difficult to enjoy. This deserves a second run, and I hope the feel can be smoothend out for batch no.2.
