Pint glass.

Of the beers I tried on my first visit to the English Ales Brewery this was my favorite.

Pours a deep dark black with a beige head. The head sticks for a while and there is an abundance of lacing down the glass. Scents are strong coffee. A good bitter scent wakes up the nostrils. A singed malt enlightens the nose. Some sweetness reveals itself to balance out the bitter coffee bite.

Flavors are very dry on the palate. A good strong coffee flavor is the main focus of this stout. Burnt malts and some medium bitter hops round it out. The coffee flavors take the forefront but there is a sweet molassas which hides at first and then appears to mediate the flavors. The bitterness relaxes as the ale warms. A real pleasing start to finish for this stout.

Mouthfeel is robust and full bodied. It stays strong until the end. A wonderful sipping stout for the slow drinker to be sure. This stout is a real treat and as it warms a bit it unfolds its true textures and becomes smoother with each passing minute. I really enjoyed this stout.

If your travels bring you to this brewery I recommend trying the Black Hound Stout.

Appearance: Black body with a tan head but little lacing

Smell: Strong coffee on the nose

Taste: Roasted coffee and chocolate flavors dominate the tastebuds along with some bitterness on the finish

Mouthfeel: A little light bodied for a stout; low levels of carbonation

Drinkability: Very nice flavor profile but a bit light in the body for my preference
