Our 7 year Anniversary Russian Imperial Stout Ale begins with being aged in coconut and then spends eight months in Mississippi River Distilling bourbon barrels with a heavy dose of vanilla bean. Rich whiskey flavors with accents of cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla and oak.

Thanks to K.D. for this white-waxed 22 oz. bottle. Split with my wife to celebrate her first day at a new job.
‘Tis black, as snarkily insinuated by the style, quickly falling to near flat. Strong sweetness emanating from the malt along with moderate coconut. No barrel. Hopefully all lurking in the taste.
Backpocket 7th Anniversary leaves me whelmed. There’s a nice, chewy, thick stout that leans slightly into sweet & roasted malt, followed by a slice of coconut. The barrel is a mere echo of heat in the back of the throat: no taste, no wood. It is warming my belly, though. The lack of complexity plays up the drinkability.
I want to like this more. There’s a nice base stout with a good shaft of coconut, but the barrel is MIA. I’d be irate if I’d paid $22/bottle. A routine, pretty good barrel aged stout in a world full of superior stouts.
