Much like the original with the chocolate fudge, char, vanilla and oak, but the molasses, sugar cane and especially rum overpowers all nuance, reducing the smell and taste to a surface level experience, that while enjoyable misses out on the potential of this beer. Smell is less effected by the booze heat than the palate. Feel suffers the most compared to the original that was elevated and complete, this is a bull in the china shop by comparison, good chewiness helps though. It's fine but could have been so much more

A: This poured opaque black with thick tan head.
S: It smelled like sweet raisins and brown sugar, with some honey wheat and oak.
T: It tasted like honey wheat and toffee, with some raisin and brown sugar and oak. It had a smooth sweet aftertaste with some alcohol warming.
M: It was thick and chewy with a little fine carbonation. Great slick body.
D: This was more like a dark rum barleywine, with little stout character. But the scent and taste and body were all fantastic. The finish was smooth, with some heat, so perfect to sip. Would age well I'm sure, but doesn't need it. Excellent brew.

High hopes when I see a rum barrel aged beer, but this was a bit off. The oak took charge, and in a big and bold way. The base beer seems like it would be great with a little less barrel character, but the oak dominates the other flavors. coffee chocolate, and rum are there, but playing second fiddle to the oak. For a big boozy beer, this is it, but for a more refined barrel character, look elsewhere.
