Jack O’ Hammered is of course a pumpkin ale, brewed with roasted cocoa nibs, and finishes with heat from serrano, ancho, and habanero peppers. It’s no secret the brewery dotes a little on this one.

Growler from a friend. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma of spices, hops and clove. Tastes of clove, vanilla and bitter hops, with a very slight hint of pumpkin. Very good.

Poured from a growler into a shaker pint, the beer is a dark, vibrant, amber-brown coloring with a tall, frothy, chunky, off-white head. Aromas of bitter roasted coffee grounds, hints of chocolate, roasted pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, earthy highlights, and roasted pumpkin seeds. Flavors are coffee and chocolate first, followed by a fairly solid kick of booze. Wow, this hits hard and fast. Heavily roasted pumpkin rich and sweet, hints of char, smoke, earth, pumpkin spice, chili pepper heat and spice, subtle vanilla, and some spiced wood notes. Pretty heavy and edgy. Not your typical pumpkin beer offering. The body is full, but with that roasted and slightly dry edge throughout. Roasted and rich pumpkin, pepper heat, and bitter coffee blend for a solid aftertaste. The beer has a dry, slick finish, with the roasted notes and bitter coffee characteristics hanging out on your palate for quite some time. Big beer.

A: Pours a crystal clear deep reddish brown in color with light amounts of active visible carbonation rising slowly from the bottom of the glass and some moderate amounts of crimson red highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a medium sized patch of thin film and a thin ring a the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Moderate aromas of chili peppers and cocoa nibs/chocolate over the top of slightly stronger aromas of pumpkin and caramel malts.
T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of caramel malts with a moderate amount of roasted pumpkin but without much of the associated sweetness that is often found in this style. That is followed by a light to moderate flavor of dark chocolate + cocoa. Finally there is a moderate amount of spicy flavors from the serrano, ancho, and habanero peppers. Fortunately there is a good flavor from the chili peppers without too much heat and not overpowering the other flavors in the beer.
M: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Smooth with a hint of chili pepper heat in the finish.
O: These guys at Wicked Weed just keep turning out interesting and delicious beers - this is one of my favorite new pumpkin brews of the year that I have gotten to try. Nice combination of pumpkin, chocolate, and chili pepper spices for both the flavor + aroma. Well constructed with a nice complexity of flavor.
