I have yet to taste the base beer, but Dark Arts with coffee (in bourbon barrels) certainly distinguishes itself as different - I was slightly concerned on opening the bottle as it had that distinctly sour nose that I associate with infected stouts. Thankfully, it didn't gush, and the smell dissipated rapidly. Thanks be to brett! Now, however, the beer had taken on a pronounced hop presence - not necessarily bad, but it cheapens the richness of the bourbon and chocolate in the taste that immediately follows. Sweet damn is that rich. Tastes like coffee with plenty of cream, chocolate, and a bit of caramel (from the brown sugar, likely?). While I like the beer, it's just a bit too sweet for me - it's so rich that it's overwhelming. I should have shared this bottle, though I don't regret drinking it.
Birthday beer! I'd recommend it, but do not recommend chasing it.
