Nice blend of tart cherries with the vanilla and cinnamon. Habanero finish subtle but easily detected. Nice carbonation present

Appearance is mulky, chocolate-milk and head is very short-lived. This leaves nothing inviting to the drinker.

Smell offers some hints of chocolate, but none of the other adjuncts are present in the nose.

Taste is simply a bad red farmhouse ale with only the slightest hints of listed flavors on the label.

I could go on, but this one was ultimately a let-down. The adjuncts used would have been better offered in a stout, so Im not really sure what they were thinking. There is just too much going on.

The head is loud and short-lived, comprised of small, dark khaki bubbles. The head reached one-quarter inch for about 30 to 60 seconds, while crackling and splattering, similar to soda water, before settling to a thin lace. Tiny bubbles form columns within murky brown (SRM 19-21). The crackling continues against auburn highlights, and the head rebuilds to a very fine eighth of an inch in a PBGC Crispy Boi tulip glass.

The aroma has strong, sour notes with oak and vinegar up front. Acidity seems very high. Much is expected and delivered, though difficult to isolate. There are cherries and habanero, as well as gin, while the others seem to blend together. Warmth brings out the chocolate and cinnamon, as well as possibly nutmeg.

Holy Cow! This is super complex upon its first sip. It is very sour and very sweet. The cherries are strong against high acidity, while cinnamon carries throughout and makes a prominent impression in the throat with its habanero accomplice. Oak forms the background while chocolate comes out in the middle. The finish is long and tart, with red wine notes. The complexity is simply amazing, and has a "Where's Waldo" effect, more than layers of development.

The medium body and explosive carbonation work to sharpen its rough texture. Alcohol is above expectation. The finish is surprisingly dry, with some metallic notes.

This bottle is labeled Batch 34 and dated 30.Oct.2018. While the style is difficult to drink in a session, I find myself wishing I had purchased a couple of more bottles. Sombra is interesting and I enjoyed it on a warm, sunny, March afternoon while reading. It would have been fun to share and discuss this with others.
