hoping this is the correct listing for the vidl spontaneous ale, which is a little confusing, even on the wicked weed website. it sounds more like a wine project than a beer project, but they do some beer too, apparently at wicked weed, but its a separate brand, i dont totally get it, but i do not see vidl as a brewery on its own here on BA yet and am reluctant to add them without all the information. also confusing because of the ratings being so poor, nobody who had the beer i just drank could rate it so low, the quality is absurd. my wife picked this up for us in her travels out there last summer and we finally cracked it, gorgeous green glass wild beer a pretty label that lists this 2022 vintage at 5.5% abv and only shows wicked weed on the back, vidl on the front, either way, its incredible stuff, a top beer for me so far this year, and it was fun to share with new friends around our first outdoor fire of the season! blonde to honey colored and quite active with a lot of small bubble carbonation and a short and popping half inch collecting on the top. it smells incredible, both funky and unique, minimally sour, with hay and straw and raw wheat and white bread, rustic right away, some green glass character, mature brett, lots of oak, white wine character too, minerals, copper, biscuit, saison esters, subtle hints of golden raisin, mustard seed, and aged hops, it has definite lambic properties and is immediately impressive. the flavor is so good, spontaneous all the way but so distinctive from others, less of the bacterial element in play and only trace acidity overall, horsey and funked to the max, gorgeously bottle conditioned as well, the texture is as memorable as the flavor. preserved lemon, whole leaf green tea, musty basement, hearty grain but dry the whole way, and then as it warms some more exotic yeast notes including pineapple and white florals, really interesting and delicious. spirited carbonation, really developed, i absolutely loved this. my first from the vidl label, hope to get my hands on more, curious about their wines too. thanks to my wife for making this happen, masterful beer! put vidl on the map! man this is special!

On tap. A bit acidic and tart, but pretty fruity and tropical. Lemon, peach, pineapple.

Very light. A bit oaky. 3 oz of this one was good enough for me.

Given to me by a friend at the Funkatorium itself, and poured into a 3oz tulip glass.

L - Hazy orange, with no visible head. Laces alright.
S - Basic "sour" note. A bit of tangerine rind.
T - A base wheat note envelops my mouth as a nice citron tartness sets in. Well-balanced, but tart and wild. Finish is tart, and a little bland.
F - Medium body, with light carbonation. Coats your mouth. Easy-to-drink. Refreshing.
O - Not too bad, but it sort of sits with me as sort of "generic". I wouldn't turn it down, but I probably won't get it again.
