5 oz pour into a tasting glass on tap at the Wicked Weed taproom.
L – Medium amber color with a 1-finger creamy, cream-colored head. Nice retention and some patches of lacing. Clear with a good amount of bubbles. It looks almost exactly the same as Freak – maybe it’s a touch darker in color.
S – Just like Freak except bigger and bolder. The aroma is still filled with grapefruit, orange, and mango hops. Caramel malt is a bit more apparent, and there’s definitely some alcohol.
T – It starts off sweet with caramel malt and is very quickly overtaken by a bitter blast of grapefruit, orange, and mango hops. Again, similar to Freak but bigger and bolder with more alcohol coming through.
F – Medium-to-full-bodied, good carbonation, a sticky and chewy mouthfeel, and a very bitter and dry finish. Grapefruit and mango hop bitterness lingers and goes well with the throat-warmth from the alcohol.
O – This is a monster of a DIPA (TIPA?). It’s similar to Freak DIPA in nearly every way, but the alcohol is more apparent and causes the drinkability to suffer a bit. It’s still very drinkable for an 11% ABV beer, but just not as much as its 8% ABV cousin. The two are very close, but I probably prefer the original Freak. Still a nice beer from Wicked Weed and worth seeking out if you’re a hop addict.
