On draught at O’Brien’s Pub San Diego
04/23/14 – Full Pint

A: Tropic Daze gives a very clear golden amber appearance. The brim draught pour leaves little head room and only a thin paper white film is managed. Low amount of stick left behind with just some light dotting upon the glass.

S: Smell is well, tropical and floral, but not all that fragrant really. I do get a nice mix of mango and passion fruit along with some mild sugary malt presence. Nice and all but could really use a step up here in the aroma.

T: Juicy tropical fruit flavors fortify with mostly mango, spiced guava, and passion fruit. There are some lesser notes of pineapple and lemony citrus. Has a firm bready cracker malt backbone to balance a moderate upper level of bitterness. I get a touch of minty herbal hops on the trail end which strikes a bit out of place. Alcohol is kept well disguised throughout. All in all not a bad drink but could definitely use an upgrade.

M: Body is lighter but with a good dose of filling malts there. Carb levels provide a nice frothy texture. Moderate bitterness on the palate with a touch of drying at the finish. Slightly resinous and a bit more on the wetter side of things in the end.

D: First introduction to this brewery is a nice one. I like the direction but could use a bit more vigor with the hops however. I mean this is tasty, tropical, and refreshing but not going to stand out in the sea of San Diego greatness. I think they should keep dialing this one in and up their late hop additions.
